November is Financial Literacy Month….which is just a fancy way of saying it’s worth dedicating a month to learning about money and how to successfully manage it. Scroll on down to find out about library programs, items to borrow, and community resources to set you on the path to achieving your dreams. 

Programs 

Have you considered working for yourself or starting a home-based business? This could be a perfect time to re-evaluate your career and make some extra money. Check out our 4-part series Make It Work. This series runs every Thursday at 6:30pm in November. You will learn what to consider before taking the leap, choosing where to sell, creating a strong social presence, as well as the business tools and logistics you may need. This program is facilitated in partnership with The Maker’s Collective, and the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre.  

Steps to Personal Finance 

Check out some of these books to help you manage your financial future. Whether you’re in debt, have a saving goal, or thinking about the future, we can all learn more about money.

  • McGill Personal Finance Essentials | This free, 8-part video series will introduce you to the basics of personal finance, from debt and borrowing, budgeting, investing and behavioural finance. (Image from McGill) 
  • Managing Your Personal Finances | Released in Spring 2021, this 1-hour course from LinkedIn Learning will walk you through the basics. Just login with your library card, and search for “personal finance.” This presenter has some other popular finance courses on LinkedIn as well. (Image from LinkedIn Learning) 
  • Jessica Moorehouse | Check out this More Money podcast, or blog about Financial Literacy by money expert Jessica Moorehouse. She offers free budget spreadsheets, and other resources on her website.  
  • ABC Life Literacy- Money Matters | Check out some of these easy-to-understand topics created for the Money Matters program. Learn about Spending Plans, Banking Basics, Borrowing Money, Ways to Save, Smart Shopping and more. Resources are available in English, French, Arabic and Chinese.
