Post by Erica, Information Services Staff

As we continue to focus on Black Heritage Month, let’s explore some of what KPL has to offer by Black authors: book club sets and new releases by Black authors.

Book Club Sets

Book clubs can be a great way to explore new reads! Message a few friends, put your selection on hold, and set a date to discuss. These Black-authored book club sets are available for pick up at any KPL location.

Unsure how to get a book club started? Read up on how to start your own here – there are endless options, including letting each reader pick their own title within a theme.

Want to try out a book club before organizing your own? Register for one of our upcoming Book Club sessions here: https://www.kpl.org/book-clubs

New Fiction Releases

Put a new release on hold, and enjoy the feeling of reading words hot off the press. Here are some titles by Black authors that we’ve just got in the door, or are expecting at KPL in the next few months:

  • Yonder: a novel by Jabari Asim – recently released. Historical fiction, set on a plantation in the mid-1800s.
  • Recitatif: A Story by Toni Morrison – recently released. Toni Morrison’s only short story, written in the 1980s, newly released.
  • What the Fireflies Knew by kai harris – recently released. A coming of age story with Black girlhood at its centre.
  • Akata Woman by Nnedi Okorafor – imminent release. Third book in the series following the mystical, powerful Sunny Nwazue, following Akata Witch and Akata Warrior (widely available in multi-format).
  • Moon Witch, Spider King by Marlon James – February 2022. Much anticipated second book in James’ Dark Star Trilogy, follow-up to the lyrical epic Black Panther, Red Wolf.
